: Nearby you will find the Cours Mirabeau with its tree-lined promenade, as well as old Aix, with the old town hall and especially Saint-Sauveur cathedral with its cloister. Excellent markets in the town. Good wine chateaux, 400 restaurants to choose from, annual Music Festivals in summer. Close to the Mediterranean.

Aix en Provence: Oozing history and enchanting atmosphere, Aix-en-Provence began life as a Roman settlement by the warm springs in the lower Rhône valley. Capital of the region in the 12th century and a centre for art and learning in the 15th, it has earned the epithet 'city of a thousand fountains', for three of its most famous, stroll the tree-lined cours.

Provence in summer and winter: Summer Festivals: Le Festival de l'Art Lyrique (www.aix-en-provence.com/festartlyrique/)in Aix every July is one of the top opera festivals. Nearby Roque d'Anthéron hosts a very active Piano Festival (mid-July to late-August): www.festival-piano.com. In the summer, there are 20-30 events within an hour's drive (see Terre des Festivals at www.festivals.orc-paca.net to find an event). Christmas in Provence. Even though nights can be cold in Provence, it is often warm enough to eat lunch outside. Skiing is 2 1/2 hours away (Serre-Chevalier, etc.).
